From Adversity to Iconic Redemption
Mir Ranjan Negi is a former goalkeeper of the Indian national field hockey team. Born in 1958 in Almora, Uttarakhand, his life is one of the most compelling narratives in Indian sports history. Initially known for the heartbreaking loss in the 1982 Asian Games final against Pakistan, he later transformed his legacy by becoming one of the most successful coaches for the Indian national teams.
His journey is a testament to the power of resilience—rising from being unfairly castigated by the public to becoming a celebrated hero who mentored the next generation of hockey stars.
Mir Ranjan Negi was born into a Kumaoni Rajput family. His father was a teacher and his mother served as a school principal. He is married to Vinita Negi.
His life was struck by personal tragedy in 2005 when he lost his 19-year-old son, Abhiranjan Negi, in a tragic road accident. In memory of his son, he founded the Abhi Foundation, which works to provide sports opportunities and training to underprivileged children, ensuring that his son’s passion for sports lives on through others.
After a long hiatus from the limelight, Negi returned to the field not as a player, but as a mentor. His coaching career began with a focus on goalkeeping techniques, eventually leading him to prominent roles:
The 2007 Bollywood blockbuster "Chak De! India", starring Shah Rukh Khan, was loosely inspired by Mir Ranjan Negi's life and the 2002 Commonwealth victory. The character of Kabir Khan mirrors Negi’s real-life struggle with public betrayal after the 1982 loss and his ultimate redemption as a coach.
Negi himself was intimately involved in the film’s production. He served as the technical consultant and trainer, spending over six months training the cast of actresses to play authentic hockey. His expertise ensured the movie's gameplay looked realistic and professional.
